Shipping Industry Sets Sail for a Greener Future with Wind-Powered Berge Olympus

ESGShipping Industry Sets Sail for a Greener Future with Wind-Powered Berge Olympus

Berge Bulk, a dry bulk ship owner, has introduced its 210,000 Metric Tons Deadweight vessel, Berge Olympus, equipped with four BARTech WindWings from Yara Marine Technologies. These WindWings utilize wind power to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Yara’s WindWings have an aerodynamic span of 37.5 meters in height and 20 meters in width, providing advanced wind-assisted propulsion and route optimization.

The installation is expected to result in daily fuel savings of 6 tonnes on typical global routes and reduce CO2 emissions by about 19.5 tonnes per day. This retrofit also positions the Berge Olympus as the world’s most powerful sailing cargo ship.

Berge Bulk’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2025 is reflected in this initiative. They intend to evaluate WindWing installations on more vessels operating on wind-favorable routes as part of their decarbonization strategy. Their broader efforts include enhancing fleet efficiency, embracing maritime technology, testing new fuels, and investing in carbon capture.
