Albania’s Ex-PM Sali Berisha Under House Arrest Amid Corruption Probe

Fraud, Bribery & CorruptionAlbania's Ex-PM Sali Berisha Under House Arrest Amid Corruption Probe

Albania’s former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party and under investigation for possible corruption, has been placed under house arrest by a court in Tirana. The judge granted prosecutors’ request due to Berisha’s failure to comply with a previous check-in requirement. Berisha, 79, is now barred from traveling abroad and communicating with individuals outside his family. He criticized the investigation as political repression and vowed to continue fighting for democracy. Last week, parliament revoked Berisha’s legal immunity, and in October, he was investigated for allegedly using his position to aid his son-in-law in privatizing public land. Berisha, barred from entering the US and the UK, served as prime minister from 2005-2013 and as president from 1992-1997. His arrest comes amid disruptions in parliament, hindering reforms crucial for Albania’s EU membership aspirations.
