Ecuador Arrests Former Presidential Candidate Luisa González Amid Investigation into Alleged Campaign Financing Irregularities

Money LaunderingEcuador Arrests Former Presidential Candidate Luisa González Amid Investigation into Alleged Campaign Financing Irregularities

Ecuadorian authorities have arrested Luisa González, a prominent opposition politician and former presidential candidate, as part of an investigation into alleged irregularities in political financing and campaign expenditure during the country’s 2023 presidential election. The arrest, confirmed on October 22 by the head of her political party, has intensified political tensions in Ecuador, with opposition leaders alleging that the investigation is politically motivated.

González, a leading figure in the leftist Citizens’ Revolution party and a close political ally of former President Rafael Correa, contested the presidency against incumbent President Daniel Noboa in both the 2023 and 2025 elections, finishing as runner-up on both occasions. Her arrest comes amid an investigation by Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office into the source and disclosure of funds used to finance political advertising during her 2023 presidential campaign.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, investigators are examining approximately $500,000 that was allegedly channelled through a network of legal entities to arrange and purchase campaign advertising between May and August 2023. Authorities suspect that the funds were transferred without adequately disclosing their original source or identifying the individuals and organisations that contributed them. The investigation is intended to establish whether campaign contributions were obtained and reported in accordance with the country’s financial and electoral requirements.

The Attorney General’s Office stated that seven individuals are currently under investigation over inconsistencies concerning campaign contributions and the lawful origin of the funds. Three individuals have so far been arrested and are expected to face charges relating to alleged money laundering. Authorities have not disclosed the full identities of those detained or provided further details about the alleged financial transactions.

González has strongly rejected the allegations, describing the accusation as absurd in a statement posted on social media platform X. She also called on members of her political movement to unite in support of what she described as the struggle for freedom and democracy in Ecuador.

Gabriela Rivadeneira, head of the Citizens’ Revolution party, confirmed González’s arrest and criticised the investigation, characterising it as politically motivated persecution. She demanded González’s immediate release and argued that the proceedings represented an attempt to target opposition figures. Rivadeneira also maintained that the financial resources used during the 2023 campaign had been properly accounted for and that previously imposed financial penalties from the electoral authority had already been paid.

Former President Rafael Correa, who supported González’s presidential campaigns, also dismissed the allegations. Speaking to a local radio programme, Correa described the proceedings as political persecution rather than a legitimate effort to enforce electoral regulations. His comments reflect the wider opposition’s concerns about the treatment of political figures associated with the former administration.

The investigation centres on campaign advertising expenditure incurred during the 2023 presidential election, when González emerged as the principal challenger to Noboa. She subsequently contested the 2025 election but again lost to the incumbent, while alleging electoral fraud following the result. These repeated electoral contests have placed her at the centre of Ecuador’s political opposition and made the investigation particularly consequential for the country’s political landscape.

The arrest also comes at a time when González had sought to participate in local elections scheduled for November 29. However, she was unable to register her candidacy because of party registration requirements. The latest developments further complicate her political position as authorities continue examining the financing arrangements associated with her earlier presidential campaign.

The case raises important questions about transparency in political financing, the disclosure of campaign contributions and the potential use of complex legal entities to channel funds into electoral advertising. While the prosecution is seeking to establish whether the approximately $500,000 was derived from lawful sources and properly declared, González and her political allies maintain that the campaign’s finances were accounted for and that the investigation is politically driven.

As proceedings continue, the investigation will be closely watched for its implications for Ecuador’s electoral accountability framework, the enforcement of anti-money laundering provisions and the relationship between prosecutorial action and political competition. The outcome will depend on the evidence established by investigators and the judicial process, including whether authorities can substantiate the alleged financial irregularities while ensuring the rights of those under investigation are protected.
