UK Imposes Sanctions on Russian Officials Over Sham Elections in Ukrainian Territories

SanctionsUK Imposes Sanctions on Russian Officials Over Sham Elections in Ukrainian Territories

The UK has imposed sanctions on Russian officials involved in recent sham elections in several Ukrainian oblasts, including Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Luhansk, and illegally annexed Crimea. These sanctions target individuals and entities responsible for undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Among those designated are the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Russia, which organized the sham elections, and senior Russian officials, including Natalya Budarina (CEC Secretary), Andrei Aleksyenko (Head of the so-called Kherson regional administration), and Marina Zakharova (Head of the so-called election commission in Kherson).

These sanctions come one year after Russia’s illegal attempt to annex Ukrainian oblasts following falsified and illegitimate sham referendums. These referendums, conducted under intimidation at gunpoint, were overwhelmingly rejected by the UN General Assembly in October 2022.

The Ukrainian population in these territories has suffered atrocities at the hands of Russian forces, including torture, sexual violence, and mass forced deportation. Russia has also attempted to erase Ukrainian culture and identity through the issuance of Russian passports, imposition of Russian law, media, education, and currency.

Russia’s recent sham elections are viewed as an attempt to normalize its control over Ukrainian territory. The UK has condemned these elections as a violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the UN Charter.

The UK has imposed a significant number of sanctions on Russian individuals and entities in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This includes sanctions on banks, oligarchs, and over 1,600 individuals and entities. These sanctions have had a significant impact on Russia’s economy, leading to a recession and a budget deficit.

Additionally, over 60% of Russia’s foreign reserves have been immobilized. The UK has played a substantial role in these sanctions, working in coordination with international partners to address Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
