South African Ex-Speaker Faces Corruption Charges Amid Resignation

Fraud, Bribery & CorruptionSouth African Ex-Speaker Faces Corruption Charges Amid Resignation

Former South African Parliament Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula faces charges of corruption and money laundering, totaling 12 counts and one count respectively.

She appeared in court after surrendering to police. Allegations suggest she sought bribes in exchange for contracts while serving as defense minister.

Mapisa-Nqakula denied wrongdoing, stating she’s not inclined to commit crimes. However, prosecutors claim to have substantial evidence against her.

Released on bail, Mapisa-Nqakula resigned amid ongoing investigations, emphasizing it’s not an admission of guilt. President Cyril Ramaphosa praised her decision, citing integrity.

A police raid on her home last month preceded the legal turmoil. A veteran of the ANC, she served as defense minister and became speaker in 2021.

Despite her attempt to prevent arrest, the court dismissed her plea. Allegations involve soliciting $120,000 for a tender to transport army equipment.

The case adds to the ANC’s corruption woes. Mapisa-Nqakula’s resignation may alleviate pressure on the party, facing electoral challenges due to corruption scandals.
