Fraud, Bribery & CorruptionFormer Albanian PM Sali Berisha, 79, under house arrest amid corruption probe; alleges political motives

Albanian opposition leader and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, 79, has been placed under house arrest by a court following a probe into potential corruption. The judge, Irena Gjoka, granted prosecutors’ request due to Berisha’s violation of previous reporting measures. Berisha’s lawyer plans to appeal the decision, arguing that no new evidence justifies the restrictions. Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party, is also prohibited from communicating with anyone other than family members residing with him. He claims the arrest is politically motivated. Last week, parliament revoked Berisha’s legal immunity, leading to potential wider political implications. Berisha faces allegations of abusing his position to assist his son-in-law in a land privatization scheme. The U.S. and the UK had previously barred Berisha and his family from entry due to alleged corruption. The ongoing political disruptions hinder crucial reforms as Albania aims for EU membership.
