Microsoft Expands Carbon Removal Portfolio with Inherit Carbon Solutions Partnership

ESGMicrosoft Expands Carbon Removal Portfolio with Inherit Carbon Solutions Partnership

Microsoft has entered a carbon removal agreement with Inherit Carbon Solutions, a startup focusing on capturing and permanently storing CO2 from the production of renewable natural gas (RNG). RNG, derived from organic waste, mirrors fossil-based natural gas and aids in decarbonizing challenging sectors like road transport and heavy industry without requiring infrastructure replacements. Inherit Carbon Solutions, founded in Oslo in 2021, captures CO2 during RNG production and transports it for permanent geological storage after liquefying it. This deal expands Microsoft’s carbon removal portfolio as part of its initiative to achieve carbon negativity by 2030 and eliminate all historical emissions by 2050. Microsoft has recently announced various carbon removal agreements, including nature-based deals, Direct Air Capture (DAC) agreements, and ocean-based carbon dioxide removal partnerships. Brian Marrs, Senior Director of Energy & Carbon Removal at Microsoft, expressed excitement about collaborating with Inherit and contributing to global climate efforts.
