SanctionsCandidate and EFTA Countries Harmonize Policies with EU on Key Sanctions and Arms Control Issues

Yesterday, several candidate countries and EFTA (European Free Trade Association) countries expressed their alignment with the European Union (EU) on certain matters related to sanctions and arms control. These countries are in sync with the EU’s positions and actions in these areas:

  1. Iran Nuclear Weapons Sanctions: The candidate countries, including North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and EFTA countries such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, have aligned themselves with the EU regarding the maintenance of sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear weapons program. This alignment comes after the transition day of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) and an amendment to an Iran listing amendment.
  2. Renewal of Chemical Weapons Sanctions Regime: The same group of countries, including the candidate countries and Georgia, have also aligned themselves with the EU’s decision to renew its sanctions regime related to chemical weapons. This renewal extends the sanctions regime until October 2026.

These alignments demonstrate the coordination and cooperation between these countries and the EU on matters of international importance, including arms control and sanctions.
