Former Papua Governor Lukas Enembe has been found guilty of corruption by the Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court and sentenced to eight years in prison. In addition to the prison term, he must return Rp 19.7 billion ($1.2 million) in embezzled state funds and pay a fine of Rp 500 million. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two years of imprisonment.
Furthermore, a five-year ban on running for public office has been imposed on Lukas Enembe, to take effect after he has served his full sentence. The judge noted his disruptive behavior during the court proceedings, including the use of profanities, as an aggravating factor in the verdict.
The court also rejected Lukas’ request to unfreeze bank accounts held by his wife and son due to ongoing investigations into separate money laundering charges.
Lukas was accused of accepting Rp 47 billion in bribes from private companies that secured contracts with the Papua government during his tenure. He faces additional charges related to money laundering, with the Corruption Eradication Commission seizing a substantial sum of banknotes worth Rp 82 billion from him.
The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) revealed that Lukas had made significant payments to overseas casinos, totaling 55 million Singapore dollars (US$39 million) since 2017, based on an analysis of his financial records at the request of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). One of these payments was as high as 5 million Singapore dollars.
