Human RightsH&M to Gradually Exit Myanmar Amid Labor Abuse Concern

H&M has announced its plan to gradually withdraw from Myanmar due to escalating operational challenges aligned with its standards. The brand expressed worry about labor abuse allegations in the country’s garment factories. A recent report by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC) highlighted 212 cases of labor and human rights abuses affecting over 108,000 workers, with allegations increasing from 56 to 156 within a year. H&M is addressing these cases through local engagement and collaboration with stakeholders, while closely monitoring the situation. The report outlined concerns including wage reduction, unfair dismissal, gender-based violence, and restrictions on workers’ rights. Despite calls for action, some fashion brands still maintain ties with Myanmar.
