On December 17, 2025, human rights defender for the rights of indigenous communities, Daria Egereva, was arrested and charged with “participation in the activities of a terrorist organization”.
Daria Egereva is a well-known human rights defender and climate activist who has long been working internationally for Indigenous communities. Her work focuses exclusively on climate issues, Indigenous culture, language, and women’s rights. Daria’s prosecution appears to be a direct act of retaliation for her human rights work.
Laws on combating terrorism must not be misused to target indigenous civil society and silence those who advocate for the promotion and protection of the rights of minorities and marginalized communities.
