Former Security Advisor to President Weah, Jefferson Karmoh, Jailed for Economic Sabotage

Fraud, Bribery & CorruptionFormer Security Advisor to President Weah, Jefferson Karmoh, Jailed for Economic Sabotage

Former Security Advisor to President George Weah, Jefferson Karmoh, has been jailed by the Monrovia City Court on charges of economic sabotage. Karmoh, along with several other high-ranking officials from the Weah-Taylor administration, was arrested earlier by the court.

The arrested officials include former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah, former Solicitor General Cllr. Nyenati Tuan, former FIU (now FIA) Comptroller D. Moses P. Cooper, and former Director General of the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) Stanley Ford.

They face charges of economic sabotage, theft, illegal disbursement and expenditure of public funds, theft of property, criminal facilitation, and criminal conspiracy. These charges stem from a complaint by the Liberian government, represented by the Ministry of Justice and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).

The defendants are accused of conspiring in July 2023 with co-defendant Stanley Ford, improperly appointing him to the National Security Council of Liberia, violating the National Security Act of Liberia.

In September 2023, the defendants allegedly executed their scheme, falsely presenting themselves as discharging their duties as Joint Security officials of Liberia. They allegedly, without authorization and with criminal intent, misappropriated funds transferred from the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) to the FIA’s operational accounts, amounting to L$1,055,152,540.00 and US$500,000.00.

Meanwhile, former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah is reportedly in Cote d’Ivoire.

Karmoh is now the third former official of the Weah-Taylor administration to be imprisoned at the Monrovia Central Prison on charges of economic sabotage in a single day.
