Dow, a major player in chemicals and materials science, has confirmed its $6.5 billion Fort Saskatchewan Path2Zero initiative, aiming to construct the world’s inaugural net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions ethylene plant in Alberta, Canada. The project involves establishing a new ethylene cracker, boosting polyethylene capacity by 2 million metric tons annually, and retrofitting an existing cracker for net zero emissions. Dow plans to dedicate around $1 billion per year to decarbonize its global assets, aligning with its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The project will employ Linde’s technology to convert off-gas to hydrogen, capturing and storing carbon dioxide emissions. Dow anticipates $1 billion EBITDA growth yearly, decarbonizing 20% of its global ethylene capacity. Construction is set to commence in 2024, with phased capacity additions starting in 2027 and government support from Canada, Alberta, and Fort Saskatchewan. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith sees the investment as a boost for jobs, the economy, and environmental goals.
