Sarkozy Denies Wrongdoing in Appeal Against Illegal Campaign Financing Conviction

Fraud, Bribery & CorruptionSarkozy Denies Wrongdoing in Appeal Against Illegal Campaign Financing Conviction

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has vehemently denied any wrongdoing as he appeals a one-year jail sentence for illegal campaign financing. Facing a series of legal issues since his term in office (2007-2012), Sarkozy is charged with corruption, bribery, influence-peddling, and breaking campaign financing laws. The current appeal pertains to the “Bygmalion affair,” where he was sentenced in September 2021 for concealing the true cost of his 2012 re-election bid. Sarkozy argues that he neither had knowledge of nor benefited from fraud in his campaign. Despite legal challenges, Sarkozy remains an influential figure in French politics.
