EU Introduces Fresh Sudan Sanctions Framework to Promote Peace and Human Rights

Human RightsEU Introduces Fresh Sudan Sanctions Framework to Promote Peace and Human Rights

The EU has introduced a fresh Sudan sanctions framework, entailing freezing the assets of individuals and entities involved in actions that jeopardize Sudan’s peace, stability, or security, hinder the resumption of the political transition in Sudan, impede the delivery, access to, or distribution of humanitarian aid, or commit severe human rights violations (Council Regulation (EU) 2023/2147, Council Decision (CFSP) 2023/2135).

These new sanctions expand upon existing EU measures that enforce the UN arms embargo, asset freezes, and travel bans targeting those obstructing the peace process, posing a threat to Darfur’s stability, and violating human rights law (Council Regulation (EU) No 747/2014, Council Decision 2014/450/CFSP).
