Warehouse club retail giant Costco has pledged to provide new disclosures regarding its plastic footprint and release a plastic reduction action plan following discussions with the environmentally focused investor Green Century. The commitment comes as part of efforts to expand Costco’s plastic reduction initiatives.
Costco has agreed to disclose its plastic footprint in July 2024, including details on the total plastic footprint of its Kirkland Signature in-house brand and the percentage of recycled content in its plastic packaging. Additionally, the company will release a 5-year action plan in December 2024, outlining steps to reduce total plastic in its Kirkland Signature Packaging and report on progress annually.
Green Century commended Costco for these steps but also noted that more needs to be done, particularly regarding single-use plastics. Green Century, along with over 180 other asset managers, signed a statement earlier this year calling for companies to reduce single-use plastic packaging, promote reusables, phase out hazardous chemicals, and advocate for responsible plastics legislation. They emphasized the significant economic and environmental costs associated with single-use plastics, including emissions and ocean pollution.
Costco’s commitment aligns with growing global awareness of the environmental impact of plastic waste and the need for corporations to take responsibility for their plastic footprint.
