Hong Kong residents have been issued a police warning about fraudulent actors posing as representatives from Binance and sending deceptive texts. In the past two weeks, authorities have recorded 11 cases, resulting in reported losses of HK$3.5 million.
According to a local news report, law enforcement has raised concerns about a surge in fraudulent activities, particularly phishing text messages that imitate Binance, the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchange.
These scammers employ enticing tactics to trick users into clicking on these fraudulent text messages, gaining unauthorized access to victims’ Binance accounts and stealing their digital assets.
In response, the police have advised citizens to take precautions, such as assessing the security risks of different platforms, securing significant virtual assets in offline wallets, and using licensed trading platforms in Hong Kong for investments.
This warning coincides with growing awareness of losses due to hacks and scams in the crypto industry, with Q3 of 2023 alone seeing losses of $889.3 million.
Gary Gensler, Chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has also expressed concerns about fraud and regulatory compliance in the crypto space.
Another figure associated with Binance, Aman, has raised concerns about scams involving CZ’s images in NFTs and false promises of rewards. Users were lured into linking their wallets to scammer’s websites, resulting in significant losses.
Hong Kong’s securities regulator and police have established a task force to monitor suspicious activities in cryptocurrency exchanges following the JPEX crypto exchange controversy. The task force aims to strengthen cooperation in investigating illicit activities related to virtual asset trading platforms.
The JPEX incident poses a challenge to Hong Kong’s aspirations of becoming a regional hub for crypto and fintech activities after introducing a new regulatory framework and granting mandatory licenses for digital asset trading platforms earlier this year.
