Kentucky Governor Launches Medical Marijuana Program Tracking Website and Forms Cannabis Workgroup

MRBKentucky Governor Launches Medical Marijuana Program Tracking Website and Forms Cannabis Workgroup

Kentucky’s Governor, Andy Beshear, has launched a new government website to track the upcoming implementation of the state’s medical marijuana program. He also announced the creation of a workgroup to study cannabis policy developments in the state and across the country.

Governor Beshear signed a medical marijuana legalization bill into law in March, and during a recent press conference, he provided updates on various programs and initiatives related to cannabis in the state. The new website, kymedcan.ky.gov, allows prospective medical marijuana patients and those interested in the program to follow its progress. The website provides information relevant to potential providers, growers, physicians, nurse practitioners, and others. Social media pages for updates have been created on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn.

Additionally, the governor established a “Team Kentucky Medical Cannabis Workgroup,” consisting of 12 members from various sectors such as law enforcement, agriculture, healthcare, workforce, and economic development. This workgroup will study the evolving medical cannabis industry and make recommendations to ensure safe access to medical cannabis in Kentucky.

While the medical marijuana program is set to launch in 2025, patients with qualifying medical conditions can legally obtain up to eight ounces of medical cannabis from dispensaries in other states, following certain criteria outlined in an executive order. Another executive order regulates the sale of delta-8 THC products.

Governor Beshear highlighted the importance of medical cannabis as an alternative to opioids, especially for patients with conditions like cancer and PTSD. He expressed pride in the progress made toward implementing medical cannabis legalization in Kentucky and mentioned plans to advance the issue administratively.

Furthermore, Governor Beshear has expressed support for broader marijuana legalization in the past, emphasizing its potential benefits for Kentucky farmers to grow and sell cannabis to other states.
