The Swiss government has implemented stricter sanctions in line with the European Union (EU) regarding the sale, delivery, export, and transit of components used in the construction and production of drones. These sanctions took effect on a recent Friday and also include financial and travel sanctions against individuals and organizations linked to support for the Iranian drone program.
The decision to adopt these sanctions comes as a response to Iran’s ongoing military support for Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, which is seen as a violation of international law. Additionally, Russia has been utilizing Iranian-made Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to assist in its military aggression.
This move by the Swiss government reflects its commitment to align closely with the EU on matters of sanctions. Switzerland had already been applying EU sanctions related to the delivery of Iranian drones to Russia since autumn 2022. These sanctions are governed by an ordinance, which is now being updated to incorporate the latest measures.
