Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) Faces $95,000 in Fines for Casino Control Regulation Violations

Due DiligenceResorts World Sentosa (RWS) Faces $95,000 in Fines for Casino Control Regulation Violations

Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has incurred fines totaling $95,000 in the last financial year due to violations of casino control regulations. These penalties were imposed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) for failing to conduct proper customer checks.

Between April 2022 and March 2023, RWS received a $20,000 fine for not conducting adequate customer due diligence measures and a more substantial $75,000 fine for failing to perform enhanced customer due diligence measures.

Additionally, GRA suspended the license of Ceylon Sports Club for one month because of the club’s failure to adhere to regulatory requirements regarding screening and registration procedures, as well as the prevention of entry by excluded individuals.

The GRA, established on August 16, 2022, is a statutory board under the Ministry of Home Affairs, taking over the role of overseeing Singapore’s two integrated resorts, RWS and Marina Bay Sands (MBS), from the now-defunct Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA), which was created in 2008.

In the preceding financial year, RWS faced fines of $200,000 from the CRA for neglecting customer due diligence measures and $75,000 for not implementing an approved internal control system.

The highest fines imposed by the CRA over the past decade occurred between April 2018 and March 2019, with RWS being fined $730,000 and MBS fined $15,000 for various violations.

The Straits Times has sought further information from GRA regarding RWS’s breaches, but the resort declined to comment when contacted.
