US Senator Robert Menendez, who faces bribery charges, has claimed that the large sum of cash ($480,000) found at his home was due to his Cuban parents’ fear of authorities seizing their savings. He stated he expected to be exonerated and pledged to run for re-election. Prosecutors allege that he and his wife accepted money, gold bars, and a luxury car in exchange for political favors. Despite calls from fellow Democrats to resign, Menendez has refused to step down.
Federal agents discovered the cash, gold bars, and other assets during a search of Menendez’s home last year. The indictment accuses him and his wife of accepting bribes for his political influence, both domestically and internationally. He also hired a defense lawyer, Abbe Lowell, who is representing President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, in a separate case. This isn’t Menendez’s first brush with bribery charges; he faced similar allegations in 2015, resulting in a mistrial.
