John David Cutmore, an Australian pilot convicted last year in Papua New Guinea for transporting cocaine into the country, is hoping for an appeal over his conviction to be held on October 3. Cutmore, who was linked to the largest drug bust in Papua New Guinea, had been sentenced to 18 years in prison in October 2022 after pleading guilty to charges related to money laundering by receiving cocaine.
He had spent 10 months in Bomana jail. Cutmore is reportedly working to obtain a court transcript from the National Court registry to assist with his appeal.
Cutmore, aged 58, had pleaded guilty to transporting over half a tonne of cocaine when he crash-landed in Lealea village in Central Province three years ago. The cocaine had a street value of 349 million kina ($160 million). Cutmore argues that his 18-year sentence is excessive and that his serious medical condition should result in a much lower sentence.
Justice David Cannings granted him leave to appeal, stating that this case was a “first of its kind” with insufficient case references to determine an appropriate sentence, thus necessitating an appeal. Justice Cannings also remarked that the sentence appeared to be excessive and required review.
