Repeat Offender Receives 25-Year Prison Sentence for Counterfeit Drug Ring, Money Laundering, and Firearms Offenses

Human RightsRepeat Offender Receives 25-Year Prison Sentence for Counterfeit Drug Ring, Money Laundering, and Firearms Offenses

A Portland man, Dontae Lamont Hunt, has received a 25-year prison sentence for multiple offenses. These crimes include dealing counterfeit oxycodone pills that contained a fentanyl analogue, engaging in money laundering, and unlawfully possessing firearms. Notably, Hunt committed these offenses while he was on supervised release following his previous federal conviction in 2022.

Hunt, aged 42, has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison and five years of supervised release. Additionally, he was ordered to pay $60,000 in restitution.

Hunt’s criminal history dates back to 2005 when he was sentenced to 240 months in federal prison with eight years of supervised release for charges related to possessing crack cocaine with the intent to distribute and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. However, he was released from prison in October 2016 following a presidential sentence commutation.

Authorities noted an incident in 2017 where Hunt was shot multiple times outside an apartment building in Eugene. Surveillance footage captured him in a parking lot, carrying a satchel and speaking on the phone. His girlfriend placed the satchel in a vehicle to transport him to the hospital. During a subsequent traffic stop, police discovered two loaded guns in the satchel, both containing Hunt’s DNA. Additionally, at the shooting scene, law enforcement found a significant amount of blood and an iPhone linked to Hunt, containing evidence of drug trafficking, including text messages and photos of counterfeit Oxycodone pills.

Further investigations revealed that Hunt had distributed counterfeit Oxycodone pills containing carfentanil in the Portland area, and his drug trafficking was connected to a fatal drug overdose in 2018.

In 2018, law enforcement conducted searches at three properties associated with Hunt, including his residence in northeast Portland. Hunt refused to surrender and was alone upstairs for 15 minutes before being taken into custody. During this time, blue pills were found near a toilet, indicating the disposal of evidence. Authorities also discovered more blue pills concealed in a jar of baby ointment, along with three guns, one of which had a matching serial number to a gun found in the earlier-mentioned satchel. The searches yielded over $40,000 in cash, multiple vehicles, and cellphones containing evidence of Hunt’s drug trafficking activities. It was later confirmed that the pills contained a fentanyl analogue.

While awaiting trial at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sheridan, a corrections officer used his position to smuggle contraband, including narcotics, designer sneakers, and a cell phone, into the prison for Hunt and other inmates. The former corrections officer pleaded guilty in May 2022 for his involvement in this contraband smuggling scheme.
