U.S. Announces Comprehensive Sanctions in Response to Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

SanctionsU.S. Announces Comprehensive Sanctions in Response to Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

The Departments of State and the Treasury have announced further sanctions on more than 150 individuals and entities in connection with Russia’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine. These sanctions target several categories:

  1. Sanctions Evasion and Circumvention: The U.S. government is taking action against individuals and entities involved in evading and circumventing international sanctions.
  2. Supporting Russia’s War: Sanctions are imposed on those complicit in supporting Russia’s ability to wage its war against Ukraine. This includes entities expanding Russia’s energy production and export capacity and operating in Russia’s metals and mining sectors.
  3. Influence Operations: Designations include a Russian Intelligence Services officer and a Georgian-Russian oligarch who have been leveraged by the FSB (Federal Security Service of Russia) to influence Georgian society and politics for Russia’s benefit.
  4. Weapon Systems and Munitions: Entities involved in producing and repairing Russian weapon systems, such as the Kalibr cruise missile used against cities and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, are targeted. An individual affiliated with the Wagner Group, responsible for shipping munitions from North Korea to Russia, is also designated.
  5. Malign Activities in the Central African Republic: Sanctions are imposed on one official of the Wagner Group for advancing Russia’s malign activities in the Central African Republic. The Wagner Group played a role in undermining the country’s democracy through a constitutional referendum.

The United States, along with its allies and partners, remains steadfast in supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified, and illegal war. The commitment to standing with Ukraine remains resolute for as long as necessary.
