A.P. Moller – Maersk and Amazon have solidified their agreement for the transport of 20,000 FFE (forty-foot equivalent) containers using green biofuel as part of Maersk’s “ECO Delivery” ocean product offering in 2023-2024. This partnership marks the fourth consecutive year that Amazon and Maersk have collaborated on container shipping using low greenhouse gas (GHG) fuel alternatives.
By utilizing green biofuels, Maersk estimates that this initiative will result in a reduction of 44,600 metric tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions compared to standard bunker fuel. This reduction is approximately equivalent to preventing the burning of 50 million pounds of coal. Additionally, Amazon will benefit from the inclusion of green methanol, a second green fuel option in the vessel fleet.
The ECO Delivery biofuel option offers immediate GHG savings for customers, verified externally, without the need for compensatory measures like offsetting. This partnership aligns with the companies’ shared goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2040. The initiative also provides price stability and is not tied to the fluctuating fossil fuel market.
This collaboration serves as a model for other companies seeking to decarbonize their supply chains and reduce GHG emissions in ocean shipping, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable shipping practices and environmental responsibility.
