ESGCarbonfuture Secures Major Biochar Carbon Removal Deal with Microsoft: 32,000+ Tonnes of CO2 Removal Credits by June 2024

Carbonfuture, a carbon removal solutions provider, has announced a new offtake agreement with Microsoft for biochar carbon removal (BCR) credits, in collaboration with the Bolivia-based Exomad Green Concepción project. The deal is set to deliver over 32,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal credits to Microsoft by June 2024, making it one of the largest BCR purchase agreements to date. Biochar, produced by heating biomass in the absence of oxygen, is a stable form of carbon that, when buried in soil, enables long-term carbon sequestration and improves soil fertility. Exomad Green’s project transforms forestry waste into biochar, providing additional benefits such as reducing health and fire risks, mitigating deforestation, and enhancing soil fertility in indigenous communities. The agreement is part of Microsoft’s broader initiative to become carbon negative by 2030 and remove all historical emissions by 2050, encompassing various carbon removal technologies and approaches. Microsoft views biochar as a key element in its medium-durability portfolio for carbon removal.
