Microsoft & Mombak: Landmark Carbon Removal Deal in Brazilian Amazon

ESGMicrosoft & Mombak: Landmark Carbon Removal Deal in Brazilian Amazon

Microsoft and carbon removal startup Mombak have entered one of the largest-ever nature-based carbon removal agreements globally. Mombak will provide up to 1.5 million carbon removal credits to Microsoft from its reforestation projects in the Brazilian Amazon. Mombak focuses on large-scale carbon removal through native reforestation, targeting degraded pastureland. The agreement aims to reestablish around 25 forests in deforested areas, containing at least 30 million trees of over 100 native Brazilian species. The project is expected to remove up to 1.5 million tons of carbon by reforesting degraded Brazilian pastureland with native tree species. This initiative is part of Microsoft’s commitment to becoming carbon negative by 2030 and removing all historical emissions by 2050. The company has been expanding its portfolio of carbon removal deals, including agreements with Direct Air Capture technology companies and ocean health organizations. The Mombak partnership reinforces the importance of scalable, high-quality projects with significant social and environmental co-benefits. Microsoft has already fulfilled its commitment to contract at least $200 million of durable and scalable net carbon dioxide removal by the end of 2030, as announced at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai.
