Graphyte, a carbon removal startup, has secured American Airlines as its inaugural customer for the purchase of 10,000 tons of permanent carbon removal to be delivered in early 2025. Graphyte employs a Carbon Casting approach, compressing biomass into dense carbon blocks with an impermeable polymer barrier for storage in monitored underground sites. The process is energy-efficient and cost-effective, utilizing residues from timber and farming operations. The commercial-scale deployment of Carbon Casting will occur at a Graphyte facility in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. American Airlines, committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, recognizes the role of carbon credits, including removals, in addressing residual emissions. This agreement signifies a significant step in the quest for affordable and scalable carbon removal solutions.
