Amazon has announced the achievement of 100% recyclable delivery packaging in Europe, covering all boxes, bags, and envelopes for items sold by Amazon and third-party sellers using Fulfilment by Amazon. Pat Lindner, VP of Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging, expressed excitement about this step, emphasizing Amazon’s commitment to sustainability. The company is investing in innovative technology, machine learning, and eco-friendly materials to ensure packaging benefits customers, communities, and the planet.
The sustainable packaging strategies in Europe include paper-only padded envelopes, reusable delivery bags, and incentives for selling partners to minimize packaging. Amazon uses an algorithm to determine the lightest packaging for product protection, saving over 60,000 tons of cardboard annually. The recent sustainability report indicates that 40% of packages are shipped in cardboard, 49% in recyclable plastic and paper envelopes, and bags, and 11% in Amazon’s containers.
In a blog post, Amazon highlighted its global efforts to enhance packaging using a science-based approach, focusing on reducing environmental impact through new materials, processes, and technologies.
