Privacy rights non-profit, noyb, has filed a complaint against the European Commission’s Directorate General for Migration and Home Affairs, accusing it of engaging in “unlawful micro-targeting” on Twitter (referred to as X). The complaint alleges that the Commission violated data protection laws by targeting ads related to a legislative proposal on child sexual abuse, using categories like political opinions and religious beliefs without clear user consent. noyb is considering a similar complaint against Twitter for providing tools enabling such targeting. The complaint highlights potential violations of the recently rebooted Digital Services Act, with fines for GDPR breaches reaching up to 4% of global annual turnover and up to 6% under the DSA. The European Data Protection Supervisor will oversee the complaint. noyb argues that the Commission’s actions undermine the EU legislative process and contradict its goal of transparent political advertising.
