Ohio Voters Approve Recreational Marijuana Legalization in Landmark Ballot Measure

MRBOhio Voters Approve Recreational Marijuana Legalization in Landmark Ballot Measure

Ohio voters have approved a ballot measure legalizing recreational marijuana, making it the 24th state to do so. The measure, known as Issue 2, allows individuals aged 21 and over to use, grow, or sell marijuana under a state-imposed regulation-and-tax program. The law takes effect in 30 days. Supporters campaigned for regulating marijuana similarly to alcohol. Ohio had legalized medical marijuana in 2016, and the latest ballot measure reflects a broader trend toward recreational marijuana legalization in the United States. Efforts for similar measures are underway in other states, including Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota, although a recent attempt in Oklahoma failed. While marijuana possession remains a federal crime, President Joe Biden has announced pardons for prior simple possession offenses, and the Justice Department is taking a hands-off approach in states with legalization. The Department of Health and Human Services has also recommended rescheduling marijuana, reducing restrictions on its use.
