The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid on the premises of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan in Delhi as part of a money-laundering investigation. Amanatullah Khan, a 49-year-old legislator, represents the Okhla constituency in the Delhi Assembly and is also the Delhi Waqf Board chairman. The ED’s actions are being carried out under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The investigation by the federal agency is in response to FIRs filed by the Delhi Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Central Bureau of Investigation against the legislator. These FIRs are related to alleged corruption involving illegal appointments in the Delhi Waqf Board.
This move by the ED has sparked accusations from the opposition that the central government is misusing its agencies against political opponents. NCP Chief Sharad Pawar criticized the BJP-led central government for the arrest of AAP MP Sanjay Singh, stating that agencies like the CBI and ED are being misused against the opposition.
The ED had previously arrested AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in connection with a now-scrapped liquor policy case, further fueling criticism from opposition leaders. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Shiv Sena’s Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Raut, expressed strong disapproval of the central government’s actions, alleging the use of central agencies for political purposes.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur took aim at the AAP and its leader, Arvind Kejriwal, suggesting that those previously regarded as honest were now facing legal issues, with a hint that Kejriwal could be next.
These developments reflect the ongoing political tensions and allegations of misusing federal agencies in India’s political landscape.
