SanctionsEU Removes Three Russian Business Leaders from Sanctions List Amid Ongoing Debate

The European Union has removed three Russian business leaders from its sanctions list related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The individuals who have been removed from the sanctions list are Grigory Berezkin, billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov, and Alexander Shulgin, the former head of Russian e-commerce firm Ozon.

This decision comes amid ongoing discussions about the EU’s approach to sanctions against Russia and the possibility of a more discretionary approach in the future. The removal of these individuals from the sanctions list is seen as a recognition that they should not have been included in the first place, according to their legal representatives.

Farkhad Akhmedov’s lawyer mentioned that Akhmedov is still pursuing legal action at the European Court of Justice and is awaiting a hearing date.

In response to the removal of certain Russian business leaders from the sanctions list, the Kremlin commented that Russian business leaders who seek to have Western sanctions lifted by expressing anti-Russian views are considered traitors, although it did not name specific individuals.

The situation surrounding sanctions against Russia remains a complex and evolving issue within the broader context of international relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
