Ministerial Court Sentences Mubarak Al-Harees to Prison for Corruption

Fraud, Bribery & CorruptionMinisterial Court Sentences Mubarak Al-Harees to Prison for Corruption

Summary of the Verdict
The Ministerial Court has sentenced former Minister Mubarak Al-Harees to four years in prison, dismissed him from his post, and barred him from holding public office. Additionally, he has been fined 400,000 dinars.

Charges Against Al-Harees
Al-Harees, who held roles as Minister of Service Affairs and Minister of National Assembly Affairs, was charged with soliciting personal benefits. He allegedly attempted to influence the Kuwait Municipality and the Public Authority for Industry to alter the land-use designations in the Jahra and Sulaibiya Industrial Expansion Area.

Details of the Corruption Scheme
The charges involve two plots of land, for which Al-Harees sought unauthorized approval from the Municipal Council. In exchange for influencing the change from industrial craft to commercial service zoning, he requested 50,000 dinars. Following the zoning change, the plots were sold for 780,000 dinars, generating significant profits for both Al-Harees and the involved company through higher land values.

Impact of the Ruling
The verdict underscores the judiciary’s commitment to combating corruption and maintaining integrity in public office. As Kuwait strengthens its efforts against corruption, this case serves as a stark warning to officials about the consequences of abusing power for personal gain.
