The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced an indictment in an $80 million cryptocurrency investment scam known as “pig butchering.” The scam involves individuals being duped out of their life savings through deceptive tactics like fake airdrop campaigns and counterfeit websites. What makes this crime particularly pernicious is the discovery that the scammers involved in “pig butchering” are victims themselves of human trafficking, mainly located in Asia. The U.K. has also sanctioned individuals and businesses in Southeast Asia connected to pig butchering scams, targeting human traffickers behind these activities. The U.S. DOJ encourages victims to report such crimes through IC3.gov, and the U.K. has initiated sanctions to address the human trafficking aspect of the scams.
