Alexander Pumpyansky, son of Russian tycoon Dmitry Pumpyansky, has successfully appealed against European Union sanctions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to the EU court. The court ruled that the EU council acknowledged Pumpyansky’s dissociation from key roles in Sinara and TMK from March 9, 2022, making him ineligible for the sanctions imposed six months later. The decision, from the first instance of the EU General Court, removes Pumpyansky from the sanctions list, but his claim for damages was rejected. The EU has two months to appeal the ruling to the Court of Justice of the EU’s highest authority. The sanctions against nearly 1,700 individuals and entities over Russia’s war in Ukraine have faced legal challenges, with some appeals proving successful.
