Efforts to curb illegal cannabis sales in New York have yielded results, with authorities seizing approximately $6.2 million worth of cannabis products in the latest crackdown. Out of 47 inspections conducted last month, only eight shops were found selling without proper permits. This brings the total number of site inspections in 2023 to 289, resulting in the seizure of nearly $50 million worth of cannabis products. The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) collaborates with the New York Office of Taxation and Finance for these enforcement actions. OCM’s executive director emphasized a zero-tolerance approach toward unlicensed cannabis shops, highlighting the importance of collaboration for a successful and equitable legal cannabis market. The OCM plans to issue monthly enforcement bulletins, with potential fines of up to $20,000 per day for those found selling marijuana without proper licensure. The challenges include a court order affecting the opening of adult-use retail dispensaries, leaving the timeline for the expansion of legal shops uncertain, despite ongoing acceptance of marijuana business license applications until December 18.
