A special investigative team is looking into the assets owned by individuals implicated in a cryptocurrency fraud case. The main culprits behind a multi-crore cryptocurrency scam in Himachal Pradesh, Hemraj Thakur and Sukhdev, have been arrested. They amassed significant wealth, including prime properties like petrol stations and hotels, living lavishly using funds from people looking to double their investments in digital currencies. They acquired expensive vehicles, urban properties, brick kilns, and even registered properties under travel agencies in their relatives’ names. The scam, which began in 2018-19, has caused collective losses exceeding ₹18 crore, with more victims expected to come forward. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is currently handling ten such cases with over 50 complaints under investigation, with some victims facing threats from the accused.
This multi-level marketing (MLM) scam spans several Himachal Pradesh districts and involves an estimated ₹400 crore. The perpetrators held a meeting in New Delhi in December 2022, promising to return invested money by May 2023. A 13-member SIT was formed after the issue was raised during the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha’s monsoon session to investigate the broader cryptocurrency conspiracy within the state. The SIT uncovered complex financial fraud schemes tied to cryptocurrency investments.
The prime suspects, including Subhash Sharma, Sukhdev Thakur, Hemraj Thakur, promoted a fake cryptocurrency called ‘Korvio Coin,’ making false promises to lure investors and manipulating cryptocurrency prices for their gain, resulting in substantial losses. Subhash Sharma, believed to be the mastermind, had reportedly fled to Dubai. The suspects later switched to new cryptocurrencies, ‘DGT Coin’ and ‘BTPP Token,’ altering terms and values to the detriment of investors. Allegations of threats, intimidation, and the deletion of online records and websites related to these cryptocurrencies emerged when investors sought refunds or expressed dissatisfaction. The accused face charges of cheating, fraud, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Himachal Pradesh Protection of Interests of Depositors Act 1999, and Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act 2019.
