AI/MLPakistan's National Artificial Intelligence Policy in Final Stages, Aiming for December Notification

Pakistan’s interim Information Technology Minister, Umar Saif, has announced that a draft of the National Artificial Intelligence Policy is currently being finalized through consultations with relevant stakeholders, with the aim of official notification by December. The policy focuses on harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in various sectors. AI involves developing computer systems capable of performing tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as learning from data, recognizing patterns, making decisions, and solving problems.

The policy recognizes the significant benefits of AI, including improved decision-making processes, personalized medical treatments, and enhanced learning experiences. The government emphasizes the need to train individuals in AI skills as they are highly valuable.

The AI policy is structured around four main points: enabling AI through awareness and readiness, facilitating the AI market, building a progressive and trusted AI environment, and promoting AI transformation and evolution. A policy committee composed of experts from the IT industry, academia, and government will lead the consultation process to finalize the draft.

The policy aims to ensure equitable opportunity distribution and responsible AI use. It proposes collaboration with other countries to share best practices and expertise in the AI field. Additionally, it suggests the establishment of an AI regulatory directorate to ensure ethical and responsible AI usage.

Furthermore, the draft policy addresses the potential job displacement resulting from AI’s global proliferation, highlighting its potential to stimulate economic growth, create new jobs and industries, and improve productivity and efficiency. The policy envisions embracing AI while appreciating human intelligence and promoting a hybrid intelligence ecosystem for equitable, responsible, and transparent AI use.
