Syracuse Cracks Down on Illegal Marijuana Sales, Shuts Down Five Retail Shops

MRBSyracuse Cracks Down on Illegal Marijuana Sales, Shuts Down Five Retail Shops

Five retail shops in Syracuse, including two near the Syracuse University campus, have been shut down after state agencies accused them of violating laws against illegal marijuana sales. The state Office of Cannabis Management and the state Department of Taxation and Finance charged the shops with possessing illicit marijuana and selling it without proper licenses. Following these charges, the Syracuse Department of Code Enforcement declared the locations unfit for human occupancy, leading to the shutdown of legal businesses operating in those spaces. The crackdown aims to contain the growth of illicit cannabis shops since New York state legalized adult-use cannabis in 2021, as the state has been slow to roll out its own legal dispensaries. The city’s effort includes shutting down businesses and potentially going after landlords who own the properties hosting illegal weed sellers.
